The Life Time Fitness 60-Day Challenge was something I had not known I needed. I had gotten out of shape and gained quite a bit of weight. The weight gain was gradual and went unnoticed until one day, when I stopped at the top of the stairs at the Fridley club, I asked myself…. “Are you seriously out of breath from two flights of stairs??” And as I pressed on towards the front desk, I noticed a sign for the 60-Day Challenge. I took a look, walked by and worked my shift. As I walked back towards the stairs, I was relieved because going down stairs is my favorite part about stairs, only to recall…. that I must come back up the stairs, my least favorite stair activity. Avoiding the stairs as long as possible, I reread the 60-Day sign. I thought to myself “This sign…. Is a sign.” So I joined the Challenge on a whim, at the precipice of my laziness and the stairs.

Week 1:
I hit the ground running, pushing myself in the gym and being very strict about my diet. I hate stairs, you se, and I wanted to conquer the stairs. So I went on the stair stepper on day 2 for cardio, and I decided I hate this machine much more than normal stairs. The stairs are no longer my enemy, but my enemy’s immobile cousin. Through my efforts of weight training and dieting, I lost 10 lbs the first week.

Week 2-8:
I know. Quite the jump in time frame, but honestly i did the same thing over and over again through these weeks. On average i lost about 2 to 3 pounds a week. I was not as strict on WHAT I ate through these weeks but was strict on HOW MUCH I ate. Through these weeks I maintained going to the gym and doing weight training 2 to 3 days a week. I experimented with a few different diets (Keto, low carb-high protein, intermittent fasting, 6 small meals a day) and they all worked. They all had something in common and that was that I was in a calorie deficit every day. Because of this I decided to just count calories and eat normally. (I had a lot of Chipotle during this diet.) I would like to point out that the one diet I liked the most was intermittent fasting. That dieting/eating schedule worked well with my work schedule and times I could comfortably eat.

Life Time Fitness:
The Life Time Fitness facilities in Fridley and New Hope made this Challenge obtainable for me. Both have comfortable atmospheres to work out in and were easy for me to get to. I cannot thank my fellow team members enough. They were all very supportive of my goal and made it very easy for me to want to finish the Challenge strong.

Conclusion:
A study in 2009 at the University College London took 96 subjects and examined their new habits over the span of 12 weeks. On average they found that it took 66 days for a new habit to finally stick. I read the article on this study in the first week of the 60-Day Challenge, and I took it upon myself to be my own test subject. I can say for a fact that I have new, healthier eating habits now because of this Challenge. This Challenge is a perfect tool for not only weight loss, but also for lifestyle and self-image repair. I no longer have the urge to destroy a whole pizza, or feel the need to eat when not hungry just because it’s something to do. I will continue to keep pushing myself even though this Challenge has come to an end. I would highly recommend this Challenge to anyone looking for a change or for anyone looking for a challenge.
