Protein is critical for building muscle. Anyone trying to get lean or build muscle must consume adequate protein every day. Plus, eating enough protein boosts your metabolism, helps stabilize blood sugars and energy, and even helps manage appetite.
Protein requires much more energy to digest than carbs or fat, so you actually burn more calories just breaking down protein into amino acids (its building blocks).
If we don’t eat enough of protein, our bodies will “steal” amino acids from structures inside our body, breaking down muscle tissue if needed. In fact, muscle tissue is often the first to be sacrificed (especially if you’re in a caloric deficit) so someone on a fat loss journey should pay special attention to protein intake to avoid the unnecessary loss of lean muscle.
An easy way to estimate how much protein you should be consuming each day is to aim for 1 gram of protein per pound of goal body weight, per day. For example, if you currently weigh 200 pounds, but you want to be 160 pounds, aim for 160 grams of protein per day.
It would be great if you could meet all your protein needs from whole food sources, but that often requires prior planning, refrigeration, and other not-always-convenient tasks like shopping and cooking at least a few times a week. That’s why we strategically incorporate protein supplements as a convenient, effective addition for many of our clients.
